About
Also known as: Michael Nymann, Michael Nymans, Micheal Nyman, Michel Nyman, Nyman, Nyman, Michael
Michael Nyman has one of the most recognisable sounds in contemporary classical music: a relentless, high energy minimalism that somehow makes you feel like you are being chased and moved at the same time. He is probably best known for the score to Jane Campion's The Piano, a multi platinum album that sold over three million copies and picked up a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and an Ivor Novello Award. Long before that, he had already coined the term "minimalism" as applied to music, in a 1968 piece for The Spectator about Cornelius Cardew. His decade long run of film scores for Peter Greenaway, including The Draughtsman's Contract and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, established him as a serious force in European art cinema. Much of his work is written for the Michael Nyman Band, a versatile ensemble he has led since the 1970s. His opera catalogue is substantial too, with The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, based on an Oliver Sacks case study, standing out as one of his most unusual and compelling pieces.
