Few conductors have had a career as turbulent as Michel Tabachnik's, yet his musical reputation rests on genuinely solid ground. The Swiss conductor and composer built his early reputation as an assistant to Pierre Boulez, working primarily with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and became the go to interpreter for Iannis Xenakis, premiering dozens of the composer's works. Xenakis considered him his favourite interpreter. Tabachnik has held chief conductor roles at the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon, the Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris, the Orchestre national de Lorraine, and the Brussels Philharmonic, where he served as music director from 2008 to 2015. His career was derailed for years by his association with the Order of the Solar Temple, a group responsible for mass suicides and murders in the 1990s. Tried twice for involvement in the deaths, he was acquitted both times, in 2001 and again in 2006, and returned to the podium. Beyond conducting, Tabachnik is a prolific writer, having published several novels and essays on music, and appeared in two 2022 documentary series revisiting the Solar Temple case.
