About
When Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter needed a composition for their landmark duo album 1+1, they turned to a Dutch pianist from The Hague named Michiel Borstlap. His piece "Memory of Enchantment" won the Thelonious Monk/BMI Composers Award in 1996 and ended up anchoring their world tours, which tells you plenty about the level this guy operates at. He signed with Verve shortly after, and his career has never really sat still since then. Borstlap has performed in 92 countries across every continent, recorded with the likes of Bill Bruford, Billy Cobham, Pat Metheny and George Duke, and even composed an opera commissioned by the Emir of Qatar. His solo work, especially from 2010 onwards, shows a more introspective side, with albums like Frames feeding into a ballet collaboration with Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. His sound sculpture Audire et Videre I now lives permanently in Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle. His discography keeps growing, with recent releases including World Tour and Andante Live Sessions.
