About
Also known as: Jmkey Spice, Mickey Spice
Mikey Spice has been one of reggae's most versatile voices since the mid 1980s, equally at home in conscious roots, lovers rock, R&B and dubplate territory. Born Michael Theophilus Johnson in Jamaica, he built a reputation through collaborations with a wide range of artists and producers including Tony Rebel, Marcia Griffiths, Firehouse Crew, Frankie Paul and Luciano, racking up releases on labels from RAS Records to VP Records and Greensleeves. His cover of Barry White's "Practice What You Preach" became one of his signature moments. Through the 1990s and into the 2000s he kept a remarkably consistent output, with albums like "Born Again", "Jah Lifted Me" and "Harder Than Before" showing his range. Later records such as "Walk A Mile" on VP and "I Really Love You" on Black Scorpio proved he never really slowed down. He also played multiple instruments, including guitar, bass, drums, piano, trumpet, saxophone, flute and harp, giving him a grounded musicality that comes through across his catalog.
