About
Also known as: Milène van der Smissen
Milène van der Smissen is a Brabant singer and cabaret performer who calls herself the Schnabbelkoningin, the queen of the odd gig. Her shows draw on years of real working life as a performer, from glitter dresses on cruise ship stages to creaky sound systems in football canteens at bingo nights. She mixes humour and self mockery with proper singing, moving easily from smartlap to power ballad and from pop anthem to chanson. Alongside the covers that pay the bills, she writes her own songs, and those are the more vulnerable ones. A lot of her work circles one question: what happens when you spend your career singing other people's hits, and can your own material be what truly lands? Her theatre shows play with that tension, taking the audience behind the scenes of an artist's life and our shared hunger for success. Expect big vocals, plenty of laughs, and the odd lump in the throat.
