About
Minja Mijuskovic Nonet brings together a jazz quintet and a string quartet into a nine piece ensemble, built around the distinctive contrast of two saxophonists alongside the warmth of strings. The group plays original compositions and arrangements by pianist Minja Mijuskovic, where jazz and impressionism meet. The music reaches for something emotionally direct, drawing on feelings of nostalgia and longing, and frames all of it within what Minja describes as a vision of paranormal existence. The suite Boya is a central part of the repertoire. The nonet features alto and soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute, two violins, viola, cello, double bass, drums, piano, and vocals. The ensemble won the DownBeat Student Award in the category Small Jazz Ensemble/Combo, a notable recognition for a group whose sound is this carefully layered.
