Mitsuko Uchida has built one of the most distinctive careers in classical piano by pairing razor sharp interpretive intelligence with an unusually wide repertoire. She is especially revered for her Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, and her complete set of Mozart piano sonatas earned a Gramophone Award back in 1989. Her recording of the Schoenberg Piano Concerto with Pierre Boulez won another Gramophone Award, which says a lot about her comfort in territory many pianists avoid entirely. She is also a respected interpreter of the Second Viennese School. From her years as artist in residence with the Cleveland Orchestra, she launched a bold second cycle of the complete Mozart piano concertos, conducting the ensemble from the keyboard herself. Her 2009 recording of concertos 23 and 24 with the Cleveland Orchestra won a Grammy in 2011, and her 2022 Beethoven Diabelli Variations earned both a Grammy nomination and a Gramophone Piano Award. On top of performing, she serves as co artistic director of the Marlboro Music School and Festival alongside pianist Jonathan Biss.
