About

Mohamed Abozekry plays the oud with a restlessness that refuses to stay in one genre. The Franco Egyptian musician won first prize at the international Oud competition in Damascus in 2009, and by fifteen he was already the youngest oud professor in the Arab world. After moving to France to study in Lyon, he pulled together a group of local musicians and formed Heejaz, a quartet blending his Arabic roots with jazz and blues. The result is something genuinely hard to categorize, and that seems to be the whole point. The band's debut album Chaos, released in 2013, channels the upheaval of the Egyptian revolution, with each track structured like a story unfolding in real time. One track, "25 janvier", a tribute to the victims of the revolution, was pulled from the final record and made available as a free download instead. Heejaz has taken this music across France, South America, Egypt, Pakistan, Iraq and the UAE.
