About
Mola Sylla brings together worlds that rarely meet. Born in Dakar, Senegal, he has been based in Amsterdam since 1987, and his music reflects that double life: rooted in traditional African instruments like the mbira, xalam, kalimba, and the Senegalese kongoma lamellophone, yet constantly reaching toward jazz, Russian folk, Indian classical, and beyond. His collaborations read like a genuinely adventurous map of cross cultural music making. One of his most striking partnerships is with cellist Ernst Reijseger. Together they composed the score for Werner Herzog's 2005 film The Wild Blue Yonder, and they have released several albums together, most recently We Were There in 2020. Sylla is also a founding member of two long running groups: Senemali, a collaboration between Senegalese and Malian musicians, and VeDaKi, a quartet that brings together Senegalese, Russian, and Indian players.
