Monster Mike Welch earned his nickname at the opening of the first House of Blues in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when co owner Dan Aykroyd swapped out his old handle "Little Mikey" for something with a bit more bite. That early momentum was real: Living Blues magazine called him "an all around guitar master", and he built a reputation as a touring act before he even turned twenty, releasing albums on Rounder Records' Tone Cool subsidiary through the late 1990s. Over the years Welch has played and recorded alongside serious company, including Duke Robillard, Johnny Winter, Nick Moss and Jimmie Vaughan. One of his most celebrated projects was the album Right Time Right Place, a collaboration with singer Mike Ledbetter that drew on covers of Elmore James, Willie Dixon and B.B. King alongside original material. He picked up Blues Music Award nominations in 2017, 2018 and 2019, winning the Instrumentalist Guitar award in 2019. His 2023 album Nothing But Time, released on Gulf Coast Records, marked a strong return after the pandemic years.
