Morcheeba built their sound at the crossroads of trip hop, folk rock, and soul, anchored by the Godfrey brothers and the unmistakable voice of Skye Edwards. Their 1998 album Big Calm is the one that really cemented them, drifting from the darker trip hop of their debut toward something warmer and more Californian, with "The Sea" becoming a genuine radio favourite. Fragments of Freedom and Charango followed, the latter pulling in collaborators like Slick Rick and Kurt Wagner of Lambchop for something rawer and more eclectic. Edwards split from the band in 2003, and the brothers carried on with a rotating cast of vocalists before she came back in 2010 for Blood Like Lemonade. Paul Godfrey stepped back from the group in 2014, leaving Ross and Skye to steer the ship. The two later recorded together as Skye & Ross, and as Morcheeba they kept releasing new material, with Escape the Chaos arriving in 2025.
