Mors Principium Est, which translates from Latin as "death is the beginning", have spent over two decades sharpening one of the most distinctive sounds in Finnish melodic death metal. Formed in Pori in 1999, the band built their reputation on a string of albums that combine aggressive riffing with melodic depth, starting with their debut Inhumanity in 2003 and running through records like Embers of a Dying World and Seven. Their deal with AFM Records, which kicked off around 2012, gave them a stable platform to keep releasing material consistently. The band has weathered plenty of lineup turbulence over the years, including the controversial 2021 departure of lead guitarist Andy Gillion, who was reportedly unaware he had been let go. The founding members Jori Haukio and Jarkko Kokko returned to the fold the same year, giving the band something of a back to roots feel. In 2022 they released Liberate the Unborn Inhumanity, a compilation of rerecorded material, and their album Darkness Invisible followed in 2025.
