Few bands can claim the kind of firsts that Mortem have stacked up. Founded in Lima, Peru in 1986 by Fernán Nebiros and Alvaro Amduscias, they are one of the oldest acts in the Peruvian death metal scene and have spent decades carving out serious underground credibility across continents. Their 1996 debut album Demon Tales was only the second Peruvian metal album ever released, and it landed them a deal with German label Merciless Records, making Mortem the first Peruvian metal band to sign with a European label. They kept breaking ground from there. In 2003 and 2004 they became the first Peruvian metal band to tour both Europe and the United States, sharing stages with the likes of Slayer, Possessed, and Immolation along the way. With four full length studio albums and a live record to their name, plus a lineup that still includes both founding members, Mortem remain a cornerstone of South American death metal.
