About
Every tune this New York jazz quartet plays is named after a town in Pennsylvania, because bassist and bandleader Moppa Elliott wrote them that way. Mostly Other People Do the Killing, with Peter Evans on trumpet, Jon Irabagon on sax and Kevin Shea on drums, formed in 2003 and puts out its records on Elliott's own Hot Cup label. Live, they like to string originals and jazz standards into big suites, with plenty of theatrics and nods to rock, pop and classical along the way. Critics took notice early. Shamokin!!! and This Is Our Moosic both landed on year end Top 10 lists, and in 2009 the band won Downbeat's Critics' Poll as Rising Star Ensemble. The stunt that got everyone talking came in 2014 with Blue, a note for note reproduction of Miles Davis's Kind of Blue. They have kept releasing music steadily since, most recently Disasters, Vol. 1 in 2022.
