About
Motograter built their identity around something you genuinely won't find anywhere else: a homemade instrument called the motograter, built from industrial cable and guitar parts, producing a bass tone that sits in its own strange category. The Santa Barbara nu metal band also has a habit of showing up to live shows covered in tribal body paint, which makes their live sets pretty hard to forget. Their self titled 2003 album gave them a real foothold, with "Suffocate" landing on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre soundtrack and "Down" turning up in EA's NASCAR Thunder 2004. Ivan Moody, later of Five Finger Death Punch fame, handled vocals on that record. The band has gone through more breakups and reformations than most, cycling through lineups across the 2000s and 2010s. Their second full length, Desolation, finally arrived in 2017, more than a decade after their debut. They also got a moment back in the spotlight when they played Slipknot's Knotfest in 2014, proving they still had a pulse and an audience willing to show up for it.
