Few debut solo albums have hit as hard as The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Released in 1998, it shot straight to number one on the Billboard 200 with 422,000 copies sold in its first week, a record for a woman at the time, and has since moved 20 million copies worldwide. The record blends neo soul, R&B, hip hop, reggae, and soul into something that felt genuinely new, with Hill writing and producing almost everything herself and insisting on live instrumentation to keep the human warmth in the sound. Carlos Santana, Mary J. Blige, and D'Angelo all show up on it. The album swept the Grammys, winning Album of the Year and Best R&B Album, and Hill set records for the most nominations and wins in a single night for a woman. Singles like "Doo Wop (That Thing)", "Ex Factor", and "Everything Is Everything" have outlasted entire careers. Miseducation is now in the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Library of Congress National Recording Registry, and the Smithsonian, and it remains her only solo studio album to date.
