About

Melbourne rapper and songwriter Mudrat, born Sean Thompson, makes politically charged hip hop that doesn't pull punches. After releasing music under the name Kvnyl from 2018 onwards, including the 2021 EP The Worst of Me, he rebranded as Mudrat in late 2023 and brought in The Mischief, a tight live band featuring guitar, drums and bass, to sharpen his sound both on stage and in the studio. His debut single under the new name, "Mud", picked up serious media attention for its pointed critique of the Australian Government's stance on the Israeli, Palestinian conflict. In 2025 he landed on NME's list of 100 Essential Emerging Artists, won a Triple J Unearthed competition to open for Denzel Curry, and self released his debut album Social Cohesion in August of that year. The record was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. His music leans hard into social and political commentary, and he backs it up off the stage too, organising and performing at pro Palestinian charity events and protests around Melbourne.
