About
Utrecht trio.multibeat builds its sound around the meeting point of hip hop and jazz, driven by beats and shaped by influences like Robert Glasper and J Dilla. The group consists of Boudewijn Pleij on keys, Thijs van Zutphen on bass, and Aron Smit on drums, forming the core of a collective that keeps pushing into future jazz territory. Their debut album Toolbox arrived in 2022, followed by Channel Island, and collaborations with artists including Pete Philly, Joya Mooi, and Marcus Tennishu Tenney along the way. With their third LP OOO, released on Berlin label Sonar Kollektiv,.multibeat returns to a rawer, more underground sensibility after earlier projects explored more accessible ground. Throughout all of it, the beat stays at the centre, and that uncompromising live energy remains the thing that defines them.
