About
Also known as: M. Perahia
When Murray Perahia won the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1972, he became the first North American to take the top prize, and the win helped cement the contest's reputation for launching young pianists. He went on to become a leading voice in Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann, and his first big recording project was all 27 Mozart piano concertos, which he conducted from the keyboard with the English Chamber Orchestra. His career has had real turns. A hand injury kept him off the keyboard for years in the 1990s, and he found comfort in studying Bach, which fed a run of award winning recordings that included a standout Goldberg Variations. He has also recorded Chopin's études and Schubert's late sonatas, works closely with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and signed with Deutsche Grammophon in 2016, opening with Bach's French Suites. After a long health break, he returned to performing at Wigmore Hall in 2024.
