Musiq Soulchild, born Taalib Hassan Johnson in Philadelphia, blends R&B, funk, blues, jazz, and gospel with hip hop in a way that is genuinely hard to pin down. His debut album Aijuswanaseing came out in 2000 on Def Soul, with the single "Just Friends (Sunny)" kicking things off, and his second single "Love" spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It was his second album Juslisen that really made the leap, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and going platinum, with top ten singles "Halfcrazy" and "Dontchange" cementing his reputation as one of the more distinctive voices in neo soul. After parting ways with Def Soul, he signed to Atlantic Records and released Luvanmusiq in 2007, which also hit the top of the Billboard 200. His fifth album OnMyRadio pushed in a different direction, stepping away from the smooth neo soul sound his fans knew, and included a duet with Mary J. Blige. Over the years he has popped up on records by The Roots, Talib Kweli, Ice Cube, Carlos Santana and Kehlani, showing just how widely he moves across genres. He eventually went independent, releasing the solo album Life on Earth in 2016 through My Block Records.
