Mustafa Sandal built his reputation in Turkish pop long before he ever stepped in front of a microphone. Through the early 1990s he was quietly writing and composing hits for some of Turkey's biggest names, including Ajda Pekkan and Sezen Aksu, before launching his own recording career. His 1994 debut Suç Bende sold over a million and a half copies, and by 1996 Gölgede Aynı had shifted more than 3.6 million in Turkey alone, making it the country's best selling album that year. His 1998 track "Aya Benzer" went straight to number one in Turkey, and a rearranged version later became a genuine crossover hit in Germany, Switzerland and Austria under the title Moonlight. The song "Araba" got a similar international push after Sandal signed with Sony Music, with the track translated into Russian, Arabic and Greek. Over the years he has sold more than 14 million albums worldwide, picked up a Best Male Artist nod for his album Kop, and scored the most downloaded song of 2011 in Turkey with the Gülben Ergen duet "Şıkır Şıkır".
