About
N'Faly Kouyaté is a Guinean musician who plays kora and balafon and sings, and he brings a West African griot tradition to everything he touches. He belongs to the Mandinka people, and his father was a griot too, which gives his music deep roots in the storytelling craft of the region. After moving to Belgium in 1994, he formed the ensemble Dunyakan, a name that translates as The Voice of the World. Three years later he was invited to join Afro Celt Sound System, where he handled vocals, kora and balafon. In the band he helped write songs that mix the music of Ireland with sounds from West African countries, including his native Guinea. It's a meeting of two folk worlds that sounds like it shouldn't work on paper, but it very much does.
