Nachtmahr is the solo project of Austrian producer Thomas Rainer, best known for driving EBM and industrial club floors into a frenzy. The track BoomBoomBoom from the debut EP Kunst ist Krieg spread through industrial clubs worldwide almost immediately, and the first full length album Feuer frei followed in 2008 to similar enthusiasm. German magazine Orkus called it the new standard for the electro industrial genre, though some critics noted its dancefloor focus came at the expense of variety between tracks. The single Katharsis became another club staple and helped Feuer frei sit in the Deutsche Alternative Charts top 10 for over six weeks. Nachtmahr has kept up a prolific pace ever since, with the album Alle Lust will Ewigkeit and its single Tanzdiktator both hitting number one in the German alternative charts. The project has also attracted controversy, notably at the Kinetik Festival in 2012, when an opening act publicly challenged Nachtmahr's imagery as sexist and fascist. Rainer pushed back, describing his stage persona as militaristic rather than anything more sinister. With releases continuing well into the 2020s, including Stellungskrieg and Verboten!, Nachtmahr shows no signs of slowing down.
