Madonna once named Nakhane as one of her two favourite artists and credited them as an influence on her 2019 album Madame X. That kind of co sign says a lot about where this South African singer, songwriter, actor and novelist sits in the cultural conversation. Nakhane first made waves with their debut album Brave Confusion, an acoustic guitar driven record touching on race, religion and sexuality that won Best Alternative Album at the South African Music Awards. Their second album, You Will Not Die, was a sharp left turn into electronic territory, recorded almost entirely in London with producer Ben Christophers. Inspired by the second side of David Bowie's Low but with the spirit of Nina Simone, the record is a heavily autobiographical piece that Pitchfork called 'an instant revelation.' Elton John championed it on his Beats 1 radio show, and it picked up a second South African Music Award for Best Alternative Album in 2019.
