About
Nancy Zeltsman has spent decades making the marimba a serious solo voice in classical and contemporary music. Based in Boston, she has taught at the Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music since 1993, and her influence on a generation of marimbists is hard to overstate. Her long running duo Marimolin, with violinist Sharan Leventhal, produced three albums and ran from the mid 1980s through the mid 1990s, blending classical and contemporary repertoire in a combination that still feels unusual. Zeltsman also ran the Zeltsman Marimba Festival from 2000 to 2018, commissioning 24 new intermediate works for the instrument from composers including Gunther Schuller, Carla Bley, and Paul Simon. Her solo discography stretches from Woodcuts in 1993 to drinking water in 2025, showing she is still very much active and recording. She also wrote Four Mallet Marimba Playing, a method book published by Hal Leonard that remains a go to resource for serious marimba students.
