About

Nargaroth is a German black metal act from Eilenburg, built almost entirely around one person: René Wagner, who goes by Ash and was previously known under the alias Kanwulf. The band trades in raw, misanthropic metal that Wagner himself calls "German Hateful and Misanthropic Metal", though the sound draws heavily from the lo fi, hypnotic style of classic black metal. Their 2001 album Black Metal ist Krieg remains their most talked about release, functioning as both a tribute to the bands Wagner considered genuine and a pointed rebuke of scene posturing. Its track "The Day Burzum Killed Mayhem" retells the notorious 1993 murder of Euronymous, and the artwork stirred controversy for including wartime photographs of Wagner's relatives. Over the years Nargaroth built a cult following across Europe and Latin America, with tours stretching through Mexico, Guatemala, and South America. The 2009 album Jahreszeiten showed a more atmospheric side, and Wagner dropped the Kanwulf name around that time as a deliberate step back from genre identity. The band's most recent studio album, Era of Threnody, arrived in 2017.
