About
Also known as: Nasio
Reggae artist Nasio Fontaine comes from the small village of Carte Bois in Dominica, and his sound draws a clear line from the roots reggae tradition. He's frequently compared to Bob Marley, which makes sense given the spiritual depth in his music, shaped by Rastafari and the influence of artists like Burning Spear and Joseph Hill. His debut single "Born to Be Free" was a genuine phenomenon in St. Maarten, selling over 5,000 copies and becoming the biggest selling single in the island's history. His 2006 album Universal Cry was a real step up, recorded partly at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in the UK and released on the respected Greensleeves label. That year he also performed in Africa, and in 2007 he played Glastonbury. His back catalogue, stretching from Reggae Power in 1994 through to Revolution and Living in the Positive, shows a consistent artist who has been doing this the right way for a long time.
