Few artists blend Arabic and Western music as naturally as Natacha Atlas, the Egyptian Belgian singer who built her sound around what she once called "cha'abi moderne," or modern folk music. She cut her teeth with Transglobal Underground, one of the first groups to fuse techno and world music, before launching a solo career in 1995 with Diaspora. Her 1999 album Gedida turned her into a household name in France, with her cover of "Mon amie la rose" reaching number 16 on the French Singles Charts and shifting 130,000 copies. Since then she has woven her voice into film soundtracks from Hulk to Kingdom of Heaven, collaborated with Jean Michel Jarre and Peter Gabriel, and kept stretching her palette across jazz, classical Arabic, drum and bass, and reggae. Her most recent studio album, Strange Days, arrived in 2019.
