About
Nate Smith is a drummer, composer, and producer whose playing sits at the intersection of jazz, funk, and just about everything else. He built serious credibility as a sideman, spending years in Dave Holland's quintet and later drumming for Brittany Howard, Paul Simon, and Chris Potter, among many others. His work with The Fearless Flyers, the Vulfpeck spinoff group, showed another side entirely: tight, groove obsessed funk that went on to rack up multiple EPs and albums. His own records under the Kinfolk and Pocket Change banners established him as a bandleader with a distinct voice, but it was his 2025 cross genre album Live Action that really landed. It won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Jazz Album, and the track Big Fish, featuring vocal group säje, took home Best Arrangement, Instrumental and Vocals. He also co wrote the Michael Jackson song Heaven Can Wait, which is not a bad line to have on your resume.
