Natalie Dessay built her reputation as one of the most thrilling coloratura sopranos of her generation, lighting up the stages of the Paris Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera with roles like Olympia in The Tales of Hoffmann, the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, and Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos. After two vocal surgeries she shifted toward heavier bel canto territory, taking on Lucia di Lammermoor, Violetta in La traviata, and Amina in La sonnambula, while also exploring Baroque repertoire in collaborations with Emmanuelle Haïm and William Christie. She retired from the opera stage in 2013, but that hardly slowed her down. Since then she has moved into theatre and concert performance, adding jazz and French chansons to her repertoire alongside classical work. She has recorded extensively, first for EMI Classics and Virgin Classics, then for Erato, and from 2016 onward for Sony Classical.
