Nathan Johnson has built a reputation as one of the more inventive film composers working today, largely through his ongoing partnership with director Rian Johnson, whose films he has scored since the neo noir debut Brick in 2005. That score alone was a statement: recorded with a single microphone and a PowerBook, it mixed piano, trumpet and violin with wine glasses, filing cabinets and kitchen utensils, earning a Satellite Award nomination and a rave from The Chicago Tribune. For Looper he went further, building much of the score from found sounds and field recordings captured on location in New Orleans, work that earned him the IFMCA Breakthrough Composer award. Beyond film scoring, Johnson directs music videos with the same hands on ingenuity. His stop motion clip for Son Lux's Change Is Everything, built from 200 push pins and 500 feet of rubberized thread over a month of work, premiered on NPR and ended up featured at TED. He also co founded the design workshop The Made Shop, responsible for album artwork including How to Save a Life by The Fray and several Son Lux records.
