Nathan Surquin is a Belgian trombonist and composer who has spent years working with some serious ensembles, including the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Aka Moon and Loek van den Berg. His debut album Ambre is a deeply personal record: he wrote every piece himself and dedicated it to his daughter. The album is built around the idea of encounters, whether that's people from different cultures meeting over coffee or on a journey, two kindred spirits finding each other, or a father meeting his newborn child. Musically he pulls from plenty of places. Brad Mehldau, the Brian Blade Fellowship and bassist Avishai Cohen all shaped his ear, and Latin American music and Middle Eastern traditions left their mark too. He describes the result as new European jazz.
