About

The Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest, known as the NJJO, is a Dutch ensemble that brings together top young jazz talent in a two year coaching programme. The orchestra works under an artistic director who shapes its musical direction and repertoire, a role previously held by names including Benjamin Herman, Eric Vloeimans and Maite Hontelé. Most recently, guitarist and composer Reinier Baas has led the group. A winner of the Boy Edgar Prize and multiple Edison awards, Baas steered sixteen young musicians through an intensive period of development. Under Baas the NJJO performed Opus Kaleidoskopus, a programme that weaves together compositions by Fuensanta and Misha Mengelberg with Zappa inflected detours, new arrangements of Baas's own work, and pieces originating from within the orchestra itself. His musical world throws together unlikely combinations: improvisations laced with hip hop, twentieth century classical music, and the drum traditions of the Pygmies.
