About
The Nationaal Jeugdorkest, better known as the NJO, has been one of the Netherlands' most serious training grounds for young orchestral talent since 1957. Made up of musicians between 18 and 26, the orchestra draws around 300 conservatory students from across Europe each year through competitive auditions, then puts them to work with some of the most respected conductors and soloists around. Names like Jaap van Zweden, Philippe Herreweghe, Iván Fischer and John Adams have all stood at the podium. The NJO's repertoire ranges widely, from grand symphonic works and opera to chamber music and contemporary ensemble pieces, with occasional crossovers into jazz and dance. Their recordings include Richard Strauss's Vier letzte Lieder with soprano Roberta Alexander and Stravinsky's Firebird and Petrushka. One standout moment came in 2013 at Lowlands festival, where they performed Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians with the composer himself in the audience. Since 2001 the orchestra has also run the NJO Summer Academy in Gelderland, a month long intensive that doubles as a public festival.
