About
Nawras Altaky builds his sextet around an old idea: the Arabic Takht ensemble, which sits at the heart of so much Arabic music. He chases the spirit of Tarab, that deep, almost trance like state of being enchanted by music, but does it with mostly Western instruments. The oboe takes the place of the ney, alongside an oud, a string section and percussion. Altaky is Syrian born and based in Utrecht, and he does a lot at once. He plays the oud, sings in a warm baritone and writes the story driven pieces the group performs, including Flight Over the Abyss and Never Came Back. He served as City Composer of Utrecht in 2025, and his meetings between cultures earned him an Edison Jazz nomination in the Global category. He has also written a piece commissioned by War Child, set to the text I Am a War Child by Godfree Lado.
