About
Nederlands Concertkoor is an Amsterdam choir, founded in 1987, that works in the big end of the repertoire: masses and large orchestral choral pieces. It's the kind of ensemble that happily joins forces with others to pull off a major work, and it has shared the stage with Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam, a choir dating back to 1829, as well as pupils and teachers from the Vossius Gymnasium. One piece it has taken on is Dvořák's Stabat mater, a work that shows why a choir like this exists. Dvořák spread the thirteenth century text over ten movements. Nine of them dwell on grief, and the last turns towards hope of paradise, bringing back themes from the opening so the whole thing comes full circle. Choir, four soloists and orchestra together paint a vivid picture of human suffering and how fleeting life is.
