About

Few ensembles can claim a tradition as long as the Nederlandse Bachvereniging, which has performed the Matthäus Passion every single year since 1922. Based in the Netherlands and specialising in baroque and classical repertoire, the group brings together period instruments, choral forces and soloists to perform the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries. Their programmes often reach beyond J.S. Bach himself: a concert pairing his Magnificat with that of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, framed by Gregorian chant and a sinfonia by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, shows just how curiously they think about context and programme building. Artistic leadership rotates among conductors who are at home in historically informed performance. Lars Ulrik Mortensen, a harpsichordist and baroque conductor, has led the ensemble, as has artistic leader Johanna Soller. The Matthäus Passion remains a cornerstone of their identity, a work the ensemble treats not as a museum piece but as something that continues to unsettle, comfort and move audiences regardless of their religious background.
