Nemahsis named her debut album Verbathim because, as she puts it, it's the word verbatim except someone is grabbing her tongue. That image of silenced speech runs through the record, which she released independently in September 2024 and which went on to win Alternative Album of the Year at the 2025 Juno Awards while also landing a Juno for Breakthrough Artist and a Polaris Music Prize shortlist spot. Not bad for a Palestinian Canadian artist who started out posting beauty and fashion content on TikTok. Her sound draws comparisons to Mitski, Fiona Apple and FKA Twigs, and she counts Amy Winehouse, Billie Holiday and Feist among her influences. The lead single from the album, Stick of Gum, had its video shot entirely in Jericho in the occupied West Bank, and Spotify editors named it one of the best songs of 2024. She has also been openly vocal about her Palestinian identity, something that cost her a label deal in 2023 and shapes much of her work.
