About
Neon Ensemble takes on some of the most ambitious works in the orchestral repertoire. A performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, the sprawling piece nicknamed 'Auferstehung', gives a good sense of their scale: more than a hundred orchestra members on stage, joined by a choir of similar size, two vocal soloists, a large organ, and a 'Fernorchester'. Mahler spent six years writing this symphony, which moves through themes of death, redemption and resurrection, swinging between moments of stillness and explosive outburst before the choir and orchestra converge in a finale that feels like a triumph over death itself. That kind of grand, emotionally charged repertoire is very much Neon Ensemble's territory.
