About
New Generation is less a band than a recurring concept at the International Chamber Music Festival Utrecht, built around one old idea: young musicians learn best by playing alongside seasoned ones. Each edition, Janine Jansen invites a handful of promising young international players, often prizewinners at major competitions who are on the brink of a big career. They pop up in other festival programmes too, but in these concerts they get the spotlight. The format pairs them with established names. Pianist Nikola Meeuwsen came up through this setup himself and has since become an established artist in his own right. In one programme he joined Jansen and violist Amihai Grosz to give young cellist Hugo Svedberg a safe place to grow, while violinist Boris Brovtsyn took the younger Leonard Baumgartner under his wing. The repertoire leans into chamber works with an orchestral feel, such as Ysaÿe's sonata for two violins and music by Fauré.
