About
Also known as: Nicole Ann Bell
Nicole Dollanganger makes music that sounds like a lullaby sung in a haunted house. The Scarborough born singer songwriter wraps true crime obsessions, violence, romance, and raw sexuality in a high pitched, delicate voice and minimalist lo fi production, creating something Rolling Stone once described as "macabre millennial nightmares, softened by dream pop tranquilizers." Her stage name comes from the V. C. Andrews Dollanganger novel series, which tells you plenty about her aesthetic sensibility. She built her fanbase largely through Bandcamp and Tumblr, self releasing a string of bedroom recorded albums from 2012 onward. The connection with Grimes was a turning point: they opened for Lana Del Rey together, and Grimes liked Dollanganger's work so much she launched a record label partly just to release her album Natural Born Losers. Her song "Chapel" later appeared on The Walking Dead, and she has toured with Code Orange and collaborated with grindcore act Full of Hell. Her album Heart Shaped Bed came out on Grimes' label, by then renamed Crystal Math Music.
