About
Niels Orens, from Hasselt in Belgium, makes electronic music that sits where acoustic instruments meet heavily processed sound design. He takes organic textures and bends them into dark, atmospheric pieces where tension, space and fine sonic detail count for more than a conventional song structure. Broken breakbeats, menacing low end and distorted textures rub up against fragile little melodies, and he lists Yves Tumor, Burial, Eartheater, James Holden and Jon Hopkins among his influences. Much of his writing came out of stretches of isolation and introspection, so alienation, loneliness and inner unrest run through it. A big part of his development came from working with Max Cooper, contributing to projects like Unspoken Words and SEME, which premiered at the Barbican in London and the Salzburg Easter Festival, as well as to Cooper's album On Being. He has shared stages with Forest Swords, Rival Consoles and Weval, and his live shows pair the music with audiovisual elements and careful sound design.
