George Evelyn has been running Nightmares on Wax out of Leeds since 1988, starting as a duo with Kevin Harper before taking full control of the project in 1994. The pair caught the attention of Warp Records early on, becoming one of the label's first signings on the strength of their dark blend of house and hip hop. The 1990 track Aftermath put them in the UK Top 40, and Evelyn has kept the project going ever since, building a catalog that stretches across downtempo, trip hop, nu jazz and beyond. Smokers Delight from 1995 is still talked about as a touchstone of the genre, and Les Nuits, a rework of the earlier Nights Interlude, became a fixture on compilations everywhere. He has also produced for De La Soul and collaborated with vocalist Robin Taylor Firth across multiple records. The 2021 album Shout Out! To Freedom... pushed into more experimental territory, bringing in a wider range of styles and guest artists.
