Few metal bands from Finland have managed to cross over the way Nightwish have. Formed in Kitee in 1996 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen and classical vocalist Tarja Turunen, they built their sound around orchestral arrangements layered over heavy guitars, a combination that turned out to be completely their own. Their early albums like Oceanborn and Wishmaster put them on the map across Europe, and Once from 2004 pushed them into the US market, eventually selling over a million copies. The band has gone through some significant lineup changes over the years. After Turunen's departure in 2005, Anette Olzon recorded two albums with them before Floor Jansen stepped in and became a permanent member. With over 10 million records sold worldwide, more than 60 gold and platinum certifications, and a spot in the Finnish Music Hall of Fame since 2018, they remain one of the most successful acts to ever come out of Finland. Their tenth studio album Yesterwynde arrived in 2024.
