About

Also known as: Nikolai Lugansky, Nikolai Lwowitsch Luganski

Nikolai Lugansky is a Moscow born pianist whose natural home is the grand Romantic repertoire. Rachmaninoff, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann: these are the composers he gravitates toward, and his playing of them has earned serious attention across Europe. Le Monde once described him as not just the finest Russian pianist of his time but one of the most significant artists of the era altogether. He has performed at the Concertgebouw on multiple occasions, and a recording he made of Schumann's Fantasie op. 17 was met with glowing reviews, with critics noting that he sets a new benchmark for the work. Lugansky thinks of music as something in constant motion rather than a fixed object. In one interview he put it plainly: how he plays a piece today can be entirely different from how he played it a decade ago, because music is a process that cannot be controlled. That openness to interpretation, combined with genuine technical authority, is what keeps his performances feeling alive.
