Nils Frahm treats the piano less like a classical instrument and more like a piece of studio equipment, layering grand pianos, upright pianos, Rhodes, Moog Taurus, Roland Juno 60 and drum machines into something that sits comfortably between concert hall and late night club. Based in Berlin, the Hamburg born composer and producer built his reputation through a string of records on Erased Tapes, starting with Felt in 2011, then Spaces in 2013, and the widely loved All Melody in 2018. He recorded Solo in a single improvised take on a 370 cm tall vertical piano built specifically for him by instrument maker David Klavins, the same collaborator who designed his custom one string per key instrument called Una Corda. Frahm also scored the German film Victoria, a film shot in one continuous 140 minute take, and in 2022 released Music for Animals.
