About
Also known as: Nineka, Nneka Lucia Egbuna
Nneka's breakout moment came when she opened for Sean Paul at Hamburg Stadtpark in 2004, and she kept the momentum going from there. She sings in English, Igbo and Nigerian Pidgin, blending soul, hip hop and reggae, and her second album, No Longer at Ease, took its title from a Chinua Achebe novel. Its songs dig into the plight of the Niger Delta and corruption in Nigeria, mixing the political with the personal. The single "Heartbeat" did the heavy lifting, hitting the German Top 50 and then the UK Singles Chart, and later getting remixed by Chase & Status and sampled by Rita Ora for "R.I.P." Nneka won Best African Act at the 2009 MOBO Awards, played the Late Show with David Letterman, toured with Nas and Damian Marley, and has also acted in the Nigerian film Relentless.
