About
Also known as: Nnenna Frelon
Nnenna Freelon came to jazz relatively late, signing with Columbia Records in her late 30s after a chance meeting with pianist Ellis Marsalis at a Southern Arts Federation event led to a connection with a Columbia A&R exec. Her debut album dropped in 1992, and though Columbia let her go two years later, Concord Records picked her up in 1996 and gave her career serious legs. Her voice sits squarely in the vocal jazz tradition, shaped by the likes of Nina Simone and Billy Eckstine, and she has shared stages and sessions with an extraordinary cast: Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Diana Krall, and Clark Terry, among others. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Beyond recording, she runs Babysong workshops teaching mothers and healthcare workers how the human voice supports healing and child development.
