Nocturnal Rites started life as a death metal act called Necronomic, but by the mid 1990s the Umeå, Sweden outfit had completely reinvented themselves as a Helloween style power metal band, signing to Dark Age and releasing their debut In a Time of Blood and Fire in 1995. Over nine studio albums they built a reputation as one of Sweden's more consistent metal acts, touring Europe with the likes of Iron Maiden influenced peers, Overkill, Nevermore, Nightwish and HammerFall, and even playing Wacken Open Air. A singer swap in 2000, bringing in Jonny Lindqvist from Mogg, gave the band a noticeably different vocal direction that stuck for the long haul. The 2006 album Grand Illusion is one of the quirkier moments in their catalog, featuring guest spots from members of Stratovarius, Evergrey, Naglfar and HammerFall alongside Per Elofsson, a three time cross country skiing world cup gold winner who happens to be a fellow Umeå local. After a decade of silence they returned in 2017 with Phoenix, proving they still had plenty of ground left to cover.
