About
Novel, born Alonzo Mario Stevenson, carries some serious musical DNA as the grandson of soul pioneer Solomon Burke, and he has put it to good use across a career that spans hip hop, soul and funk. Based in Los Angeles, he first caught attention with the 2003 Rawkus Records single "Peach", which featured his godfather Smokey Robinson, before his planned debut album got shelved when the label folded. Rather than disappear, he spent years writing and producing for the likes of Alicia Keys, Beyoncé and Joss Stone, racking up five Grammy nominations along the way. His own releases have been relentlessly prolific. The full length The Audiobiography drew comparisons to slinky funk jams, and he later co wrote the David Guetta track "Missing You" from the album One Love. A collaborative project with Joell Ortiz, Defying the Predictable, and a string of solo albums and EPs in the 2010s and early 2020s show an artist who clearly prefers to keep creating rather than wait for a big label moment.
